| #7 Posted 1 year ago | Reply | | Well, since you ask the question I will give you my honest answer. When I was a young boy I was exposed to classic rock from my dad, heavy metal from my uncle, and rap from my peers. In all this time since then, I suppose rap did in fact become more of my niche music to listen to. However, if I had to choose, I would definitely choose BOTH! Why should anyone have to choose between one or the other? |

| #8 Posted 1 year ago, in reply to post #7 by JSwiggz | Reply | | Well, rock and hip hop are VERY 2 diffrent songs. i see hip hop as talking cars, woman, getting money, and guns. While Rock on the other hand, is guitar talents, some vocals on some bands, and putting their best up on stage. When I was young, my family taught me salsa music, merengue and bachata. My peers also exposed me to hip hop. I was a big fan i when i was little, until i saw its true colors. ALL the artists talk about, touching, grabbing, f*cking, and degrading woman. I AM NO FEMINIST, but thats just wrong. plus, other things like diamonds when kids in Africa are starving looking for diamonds in exchange for food, and other ridiculous things. Later on, i began to listen to Areosmith, Van Halen, my favorite was Bon Jovi, Guns and Roses, and KISS. i loved them. Yes, we scream, an talk about death, but it's sure is a hell lot better than being touch or degraded by rap artists. |

| #9 Posted 1 year ago, in reply to post #8 by thatxoxocrap | Reply | It sounds like all you know about hip hop is the crap the media said about it during the Imus incident. Saying something like ALL the artists talk about, touching, grabbing, f*cking, and degrading woman shows how closed minded you are. That statement is totally wrong, and it can easily be proven to you. I won't even waste my time trying to convince you that hip hop is not as bad as you think it is. However, I get the feeling that you aren't being totally honest about why you really hate hip hop. I have my speculations, but if you are willing to be truthful, then maybe we could have a decent discussion about it. |

Anyways, Thatxoxocrap you can't always expect everything to be perfect. There're good Raps and bad Raps, the same stretch in any other genre. I mean, i'd really doubt that you haven't at least found one artist or song that you didn't like in your rock whatever world. I listen to rap because of the lyrics, the stories that they usually paint in their songs. Something that Rock can't do. Don't get me wrong i love Rock Too. i love it because of their instruments perfomance but in a overall view their music lack a lot of soul. |

kthx
Also, great job at generalizing all of rap music as only about "cars, woman, getting money, and guns. " I may have been against starting a flame war but I've rethought my posistion on that. Also the rap you are talking about is the Mainstream type. Thats what most people like for what ever reason and thats the reason most of the mainstream is about the same thing. It sells and thats why record excecs look for the same thing. If rapping about Money,Cars,Women, and guns is whats popular than thats what the Label is going to sign. Why do you think most of the popular Rock(or similar genres) bands are etheir Emo or Pop? Because thats whats popular and that whats going to make the label money. If popularity in rap switched to More.....Concious style of rap then those types of rappers would get signed but for now they have to stay underground. Big name labels won't take the risk of signing those rappers because the "Fans" don't want concious rap they want the "cars, woman, getting money, and guns. " type of rap. Theres more to rap than whats on TV or the radio. I'm sure the same can be said about Rock music.

I also like country, specifically Johnny Cash

| #17 Posted 1 year ago | Reply | | I like them both a lot. Those are actually my two favorite genres. But I think I like rock better because I'm not into the recent rap that has been coming out recently. |

|
| #18 Posted 1 year ago | Reply | | It's tough, but I would have to say rap. However, I'm really not into that lame New York elitist underground stuff they always claim to be "REAL" hip hop. |

|
| #19 Posted 1 year ago | Reply | My favorite is rock. But I like more classic stuff like Journey than some of the newer stuff today. I like some groups like Jimmy Eat World and some Linkin Park, but a lot of rock that is glorified nowadays is screamo (me no likey).
And unfortunately, most of the rap that's portrayed in the media is about banging dem hoes and getting high. However, I will not object to anyone informing me of any respectable rap artists that actually have good-quality lyrics. |

| #22 Posted 1 year ago | Reply | | The thing that bothers me is when people think they have the right to speak on something they don't know a damn thing about. Don't get me wrong, I freakin' hate practically the majority of the rappers in the mainstream these days as well for the same reasons a lot of you do. However, don't EVER try to judge or compare those guys to the "rockers" you think are better people when those same fuckers are living like kings in mansions, having more cars than they'll ever need in their lifetime and are fucking groupies all the time during their tours. These rock stars you think are so great may not make it abundantly clear in their music, but believe me, they share the same morals and values that you claim to hate these rappers for. I already said this in another thread, but I'll say it again; if rap music simply isn't your cup of tea, just leave it at that. But if all you know about it is what you see on Mtv or hear on the radio, then you don't know JACK sh*t about it. As a matter of fact, if those are your main outlets of music in general, you probably don't have your OWN real opinion about what good music is to begin with. |

| #23 Posted 1 year ago | Reply | Agreed.
While MTV and the radio are useful in taking any music from, that shouldn't be the basis on which musical decisions about a particular genre are made. Especially since the media nowadays focuses much more on commercial aspects of a certain culture, than exposing any variety within the music business.
Personally, I'm a massive rock fan and I don't too much like rap, but I can certainly see why people like rap and why others don't like rock. All music is the shiz.

| #28 Posted 1 year ago | Reply | Honestly, the song lyrics to both genres are the same- love/lust, women, drugs (money is covered more by rap while anger is covered more by rock).
It comes down to what you like. Until recently I didn't like hip-hop/rap. I do now (WEEZY baybay lol)
Or course, I out of the two, I prefer rock :) |
