seriously.
I'm not saying comics aren't as good a read as your typical book, but would you class them as books?

I think the fall under periodicals which means they are magziens or something. But then then when they get bound together they start using the term gaphic novel or trade paperback which is bookish.

Comic books? Of course they are books! Maybe not book enough to count as a novel in English class, but still they are books.

When speaking of comics one would typically think of American superheros and such, but in the late 80's most manga was presented in the trade paperback style. The standard of most comic books to this day. In the early 90's companies like Viz came out with Pulp comics, which are much like the typical grahic novel except they are taller and wider. This making it easier for consumers to collect whole series. Soon after the graphic novel was introduced with its smaller more book like form, and a cheaper price tag. So, anyways graphic novels are still comics, just in a different formatting. Unless you're reading vampire hunter D or kino no tabi(all words) I'd consider that a book.

I don't think they're books since 95% of it is pictures, but they help you learn to read better.

Graphic Novels are comic books but instead of maybe a few sentences of dialog they have paragraphs.

Really they can be both. Like if you buy the Sandman, Preacher, JTHM, Squee (pick anything really) graphic novels they each make up one arc from the overall story which were originally published as individual issues. Then you get stuff like The Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns which as far as I know were never published as individual issues (correct me if I'm wrong) and each section reads like a chapter from a book to form part of a coherent whole.

I suppose if you really wanted to tear this argument apart you could say the first lot of examples aren't really graphic novels but collections, but I'd say that's pretty much just wordplay.

Depends on whether the comic is good or not. The worst I file under "kitty-litter".

Ok Let's begin by calling a spade a spade please

"A comic book is a magazine or book containing sequential art in the form of a narrative"
"A graphic novel is a type of comic book"
"manga is the Japanese word for comics"
use which ever term you like but that doesn't stop them being comics, don't try to think you're cool simply because you read "Asian graphic novels" Its still a comic book

now in answer to the topic:
"A book is a set or collection of written, printed, illustrated, or blank sheets, made of paper, parchment, or other material, usually fastened together to hinge at one side."

So are comic books books? Yes.
