To contribute to the topic ...
I'm going to go out, get a piece of wood ... carve a deity through inspiration, and personal cultural bias ... and voila, I've created a God for myself. Which is ironic, considering this God is supposed to have created me (and the Universe)! |

I know someone's up there cooking something up. Someone's gotta make sure we don't kill each other with pool tables. Thats the devil's toy right there.
Thats a Music Man reference right there. |

but if you don't really follow it, does that mean you CAN'T believe in a God? |

|
| #16 Posted 1 year ago, in reply to post #15 by PhantomFan | Reply | So you believe in a God ... he commands you to follow a specific set of rules, guidelines and practices (all religions have them) ... but you don't ? |

| #19 Posted 1 year ago, in reply to post #15 by PhantomFan | Reply | ... What?
Everyone has a religion. Religion isn't defined by believing in a God, it's about whether to believe and not, and if so, to what. So no matter what you follow, you're in a religion. If you believe in God, congrats, you're in the "I believe in God" religion. If you don't congrats, you're in the "I don't believe in God" religion. =/ |

I'm doing a research paper on this topic, and it would be nice to know people's opinions on it |

| #22 Posted 1 year ago, in reply to post #20 by PhantomFan | Reply | it's scientology, except you believe that God created science. So basically, he just created the basics of everything and let logic take care of everything else.

| #23 Posted 1 year ago, in reply to post #19 by HeavyDDR | Reply | And what moral codes, or rituals, do these people in the "I don't believe in God" religion follow? Those elements seem to be apart of all religions, and indeed, binds them together.
I don't think atheists have universal moral codes.
I also think we differ in what constitutes a religion. |

| #24 Posted 1 year ago, in reply to post #20 by PhantomFan | Reply | Catholics, among other branches of modern Christianity, believe it was God who helped shape evolution. And is continuing to do so.
They are the middle-ground between ultra-conservativism and liberalism. |

| #25 Posted 1 year ago, in reply to post #22 by HeavyDDR | Reply | | yes but there is no way he could have created the world in 7 days AND evolution have taken place over billions of years. You can just smell the contradiction |

| #26 Posted 1 year ago, in reply to post #25 by PhantomFan | Reply | | He could of made it in 7 days and then snapped his fingers, said "SHAZAM", made life, and let it grow. |

| #27 Posted 1 year ago, in reply to post #23 by OverMind | Reply | | atheism isnt a religion ¬_¬ and just because im atheist doesnt mean i dont have morals, just that i do the right thing because is the right thing to do and not cus im afraid of going to hell when i die |

|
| #28 Posted 1 year ago | Reply | Atheists don't have any codes. At least most of them. Sometimes there's the ballsy one that tries to burn a cross or something but thats about it.
Phantom, you can believe in a God, but not the bible. Like me. You don't have to believe that the world was made in seven days, you could just ignore that completely.
Religion can be taken hundreds of ways. There's no right or wrong answer. =/ |

| #29 Posted 1 year ago, in reply to post #25 by PhantomFan | Reply | You can just smell the contradiction
You cant use logic against theist cus the "god did it cus he is god and he can do it" argument has no flaws |
|
|
| #30 Posted 1 year ago | Reply | @Xellos: HeavyDDR claimed that everyone has a religion ... the "no God" religion or "God" religion. I don't support that viewpoint. I was arguing against it. Atheism is not a religion. Universal morality, as I mentioned in that post, is something like the 10 commandments, Eightfold Path, etc ... Atheists don't have any of that to follow and decide their own morality.
@HeavyDDR: That's a generalization against Atheists. As I said before, they all differ in morality. It seems inappropriate to state that they all don't have codes. |
